'Final' Blog

Though I consider myself to be part digital native, my family didn’t have the internet in our house until I was partway through middle school and our main camera used film. Our family didn’t own a camcorder, I got my first cell phone at 15 and rarely used Word as my main method of writing essays. Now, after watching my 5 year old sister grow up, I have begun to realize just how much our society has shifted to become more technology based. Before even entering the school system, these children are accustomed to using technology every day. They know the basics of using cell phones and digital camera; they know to ask for their parents to go to YouTube to type in their favorite music video. It is the job of the educator to help children learn how to use and apply technology for future success. With the job market shifting to more occupations focused around computers and other technologies, preparing students for a future life involving technology is very important. By making them comfortable with using computers, various types of software, creating presentations and compiling information digitally in a professional manner, educators are giving their students the tools and resources to be prepared.

As educators, it is important to be aware of all styles and methods of teaching. Using technology as a tool has become an integral part in many classrooms. With students evolving from digital immigrants to digital natives, teachers must be conscious of their students’ learning style and how they best retain information and concepts. Students today have been born into families with cell phones, laptops, wireless internet, iPods, digital cameras and camcorders. Student learning trends show that retention and focus is higher when children have the incentive to use laptops and other classroom tools that are available. Student enthusiasm for tech related assignments should be taken advantage of. If students are excited to learn and practice skills then teachers should capitalize on that.

Explaining to fellow educators how easy integrating technology into their curriculum is important among teachers who find technology beneficial in the classroom. Complicated and elaborate presentations and digital lessons don’t need to be made. Finding easy-to-use websites where students can explore and create on their own would free up time for teachers to work on other class projects and paperwork. Also, these lessons give students the chance to learn self-discipline and accountability. The possibilities for tech related assignments and projects is endless. There are plenty of options covering all grade levels, subjects and complexity. Each teacher could modify his/her lesson to match individual classroom and student needs.

In my future classroom, I plan on using SmartBoard, online learning games, pictures taken in class, video from online resources and video from field trips and lessons, audio clips and document cameras to enhance classroom learning. I plan on keeping an open mind and constantly updating myself so that I keep current on new technology and ideas presented by other educators. Being an active part of PLNs both online and in person will be play a great part in staying updated. By continuing my own education, I am keeping doors open for future students. Being aware and knowledgeable of all resources and tools is a valuable quality of any good teacher and knowing how to incorporate them into the classroom is even more important.

eBistro

eBistro is a cute website with the home page laid out as if it was an actual bistro. From the home page you can choose links such as 'Media & Tech Tools', 'Headline News' and 'Online Resources'. Although the design of the website is cute, I found it sort of difficult to navigate and find exactly what this website could be used for. However, once I found my way around, the website had good resources to add to my 'bag of tricks'.

Online Games for Students

A great free website for students to use is http://www.multiplication.com/interactive_games.htm. The website provides games where students do multiplication problems based on grade level and in return they get the chance to play levels in games. Another great website is http://www.novelgames.com/. I really liked the flag quiz. Games like the ones on these websites make learning material fun and interesting for students. If they have an 'incentive' to learn the material then they will retain it better! Other websites I liked were http://www.spinandspell.com/ and http://justcrosswords.com/.

Wiki

I made a fairly simple wiki at wikispaces.com which is a free website. The website is fairly straightforward but doesn't have many options in regards to font and font sizes. However, I was able to create many pages and add images and links easily. Though I didn't spend too much time on my wiki, I think if there was a clear lesson plan already laid out it would be simple to add pages to suit your needs. I think students would like working on a wiki rather than being lectured to (though I am not trying to say they shouldn't have lecture based lessons as well). Using wikis allows educators to send students to various websites, watch videos and give them information all on one website which they can access at school or at home.
